One of the least difficult things about the Chinese language is its grammar.
There are some sentence structures that are the ‘standard’ or usual ways of saying things, but you can vary them tremendously and still be understood, because Chinese, like English, is a very flexible language grammatically. While this ‘freestyle’ structuring may not be grammatically the best Chinese, it will usually be understood by Chinese native-speakers.
Beginning students will find that when they speak Chinese using their native language’s grammar or word order and substitute Chinese words (a natural tendency in beginners,) Chinese people will still understand their meaning, providing the pronunciation of the words used is clear and close to Standard Chinese.
Some other general facts about Chinese grammar:
A pair of lotus flowers floating in a pond.
— But Chinese has two different kinds of verbs, only one of which would be considered a verb in English:
First, there is the typical ‘action’ verb, (in the Chinese grammatical lexicon called a ‘functive verb,’ or a verb of function,) which includes words like ‘run,’ ‘jump,’ ‘play,’ etc.
The second kind of verb, called a ‘stative verb,’ includes the ‘to be’ auxiliary verb, (the state of being) and in English would be considered an adjective (but in some English uses would require the use of the auxiliary ‘be’ verb [however, the auxiliary ‘be’ verb is never used with these stative verbs in Chinese].)
As in:
‘to be happy,’ ‘to be smart,’ or ‘to be the same.’
— Sentence structures are basically simple, usually in the form Subject/Verb/Object.
— Foreign students of Chinese often remark that the logic and order used in Chinese is frequently different from western languages and is sometimes the opposite of that used in western languages.
One of a pair of lion gargoyles guarding the Forbidden City entrance in Běijīng
For Example:
In English we say “North/South/East/West”
While the Chinese would say “Dōng/Xī/Nán/Běi” (=East/West/South/North)
— Chinese is an economical language in terms of nouns and pronouns:
For example:
Once the subject of a sentence, paragraph or conversation has been identified, it need not be constantly referred to.
— Personal pronouns, once established, also need not be constantly repeated.
— Chinese doesn’t often used specifiers (‘the’ and ‘a’) as in Western languages.
— Chinese often omits conjunctions (‘and’, ‘as’, ‘but’) and often omits prepositions (‘with’, ‘to’, ‘from’).
— Chinese does have special ways of indicating quantities (through the use of grammatical constructs which in English are called ‘Measure Words’ or ‘Quantifiers’) which are only occasionally used in English. (eg.: a ‘school’ of fish, a ‘pride’ of lions, a ‘herd’ of cattle, etc.)
— Chinese does have some special sentence structures that are very different from the expected syntactical structure of English sentences (particularly Subject-Verb transpositions).
— Chinese does have different ways of indicating past tense or action completion …but they tend to be fairly simple.
— Words can perform almost any grammatical function (ie. verb, noun, adjective, adverb) without any change to the word: the function is determined by context.
Note that sometimes, the change will be reflected by a tone change alone.
